After Dark Driving
Regardless as to whether you are driving at night or driving during the day, you have to always make sure that you are prepared for any type of situation. If you drive at night, turn your headlights on. If it is raining or if there is inclement weather, turn your windshield wipers on in addition to your headlights and slow down. When you drive at night, you should be driving at a slightly slower speed anyway because you are at a visual disadvantage. Be aware of any wildlife that you know comes out at night and put away any and all distractions including cell phones and mp3 music players. Staying focused while driving at night will keep you out of trouble. Lastly, if you know that you have had an alcoholic beverage, hand your keys over to someone who has not been drinking. It is simply not worth it to risk your life or someone elses. Similarly, if you see that someone has been drinking, offer to drive them home or call them a cab. They will thank you in the morning!
Making matters even more tricky is driving at night when there is bad weather. Even something as simple as rain can turn into something more dangerous as you cannot necessarily tell how deep a pool of standing water is when your vehicle crosses over it. One example of this was when I was driving home from work one night and was passed by someone on the left who was speeding. It was raining, and as they passed me on the left, their vehicle hit a pool of standing water, and their car hydroplaned, spinning around several times before they crashed into the guard rail. Luckily no one was hurt, but should they have been driving that fast to begin with?
Another issue with driving at night is that you need to remember to always have your headlights on. Putting on your headlights will help you to not only see the road before you, but it will also let others know that you are on the road. When I was a police officer, one of the first things that we looked for when we were on patrol at night were people who did not have their headlights on. Nine times out of ten, when we eventually pulled these people over, we discovered that the person behind the wheel did not have his or her headlights on because they were intoxicated.
Therefore, you have to be much more careful. For instance, there are a lot of animals that tend to come out during the nighttime hours such as deer, raccoons, possums and other small animals. If you are driving after dark, you should always be aware of this fact as any one of these animals can jump out in front of your car and cause you to become involved in a car accident.
