Top dead center in chevy 350?
is top dead center when the #1 piston is all the way at the top,....or at the middle where it would pass the sparkplug to create the spark?
I was looking at the TDC tool from summitracing and jegs and its basically shaped like a Spark Plug thats extended into the pistopn chamber so that the piston will stop when your cranking it over by hand. I was under the impression that TDC was when the #1 piston was all the way up,...but this leads me to believe it only has to be were it would pass the spark plug.
just to be argumentative, tdc is not when the piston is at the upper most point of travel on the compression stroke. tdc is also when the piston is at the upper most point of travel in the cylinder on the exhaust stroke. There's two tdc's, compression and exhaust. when timing the engine, you usually want tdc compression. That is when the spark plug will fire. Well, depending on how it is timed. You can do the same thing as a tdc stop by either using a compression tester hose or putting the tip of your finger in the spark plug hole. turn the engine over by hand and when the air starts to come out the spark plg hole, look at the notch on the harmonic balancer. Line the notch up with 0 on the timing indicator and now you have tdc. But, now you need to know if you are on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke. Look at the valves and if both are closed, then you are on compression. If the exhaust valve is open, you are on the exhaust stroke.
