Acing The Stat Sydney Test In Two Steps
When applying to universities in Sydney, Australia, one thing you will definitely have to do is take a STAT Sydney test. Unlike other tests which you usually would have to study for, the STAT Sydney test doesn't require that you know much about a certain topic. The reason behind this is that this test is used to measure your capabilities in understanding and translating language, and scientific and mathematical contexts which you are likely to encounter during your tertiary studies. So, in order to ace it, here are two steps which you can follow to ace the STAT Sydney test.
Step 1: Know What to Expect
You may feel a little bit better about the STAT Sydney because you won't need to study much. However, you must know what to expect before you actually sit for the test. Depending on your university's requirements, you may have to take more than one STAT Sydney test. There are four versions which are offered to applicants to universities: STAT Multiple Choice, STAT Written English, STAT T and STAT F. At times, you may have to take more than one of these tests in order to gain admission. Still, you should find out about which test(s) you have to sit for from the institution you are applying to.
If you are going to sit for the STAT Multiple Choice test, STAT T or STAT F, you will have two hours in which you will have to attempt 70 multiple choice questions. The questions consist of 35 verbal reasoning questions and 35 quantitative reasoning questions. Verbal reasoning questions will focus on testing your ability to understand and translate texts. Questions which fall under this category include paraphrasing statements or inferring ideas. As for quantitative reasoning, this kind of questions will test your ability to understand data in scientific and mathematical notation. For example, you may need to explain a graph or perform simple tasks which don't require extensive mathematical or scientific knowledge.
As for those sitting for their STAT Written English test, examinees will have an hour to write two essays –one would be personal, while the other an argumentative essay. This STAT Sydney test will check how effectively you can communicate your thoughts in writing. Three things will ensure you of a good score: the quality of what you said in your essay (thought and content), how you organised your essay (structure and organisation), and how well you were able to express your ideas (expression, style and mechanics).
Step 2: Prepare
Now that you know what to expect for each of the four versions of STAT Sydney, it's time to prepare. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), provides some sample questions in its Candidate Information Booklet in order that you familiarise yourself with the type of material that you may encounter during the STAT Sydney. Aside from that, ACER's Sample Collection of Questions Booklet will also be helpful. Besides these two publications, there aren't any past papers that you may review because ACER doesn't provide any for publication.
Another effective way to prepare is by joining one of the STAT Sydney courses or workshops which some institutions or organisations offer. These are effective in cultivating future examinees' thinking capabilities and comprehension skills. They also help by teaching different techniques which will be of assistance while you are taking your exam. In addition, such courses will help you mingle with others who have to take the STAT Sydney test, thus you can have a support group which will lift your spirits and encourage you at all times.
There is no pass or fail in any of the STAT Sydney tests. Yet, you should remember that whatever score you receive is actually a measure of your capabilities; therefore, do your best to get a good one in order to get accepted at the institution you had applied at.
