Do I Only Need One Drill Bit For The Job?
In the day and time we are living in now, people are learning to consolidate and do more with less. It is simply amazing what a professional carpenter can construct with just a circular saw and a hammer. When it comes to drilling holes, is there really any way to eliminate the need for carrying around an expensive and cumbersome set of drill bits? Is there any way to decrease the amount of time that it takes to change the different needed bits out of the chuck of the drill? Is there a method that just simply makes the job easier and faster? Yes, the good news is a marvel of ingenuity, the step drill bit. So how can one bit save you so much time and effort?
First, let us take a look at the design of the step drill bit. This is a drill bit constructed in the shape of a cone that starts at a point and slowly enlarges in precise increments until the largest diameter is reached at the top of the bit. The most popular model has a point that has the capability of starting a hole and preparing the way for the rest of the bit. However, not All Models have this point. Many need the assistance of pilot twist drill bit first to make a hole much smaller than the desired diameter and then the step drill bit can be inserted and enlarge the hole to the diameter that you want. The great advantage of the step drill bit is the fact that you never have to change drill bits out of your drills chuck. This is the "all in one" drill bit. The precise increments of this bit make it to where you never need another bit. If you need a small hole all you have to do is drill down a little until the bit cuts the diameter you want. A larger hole is just as easy. All you have to do is drill just a little bit farther and the hole will increase in diameter. The farther you drill down the larger the hole becomes.
If you are an electrical contractor, a sheet-metal worker or an auto mechanic, a step drill bit is a necessity for your work to be completed quickly and efficiently. Because of the increments on the step drill bit it makes it difficult to use on materials of a thickness greater than 1/8 of an inch. But inside these measurements you will not find a tool more useful to you than the step drill bit. The increments are accurate and can cut a hole to an exact diameter. If the hole you need is in between the increments on the step drill bit, use reamers to make the hole just a fraction of an inch larger. Reamers can increase the diameter of the hole you are drilling to virtually any size in the greatest form of accuracy attainable. So, stop doing things the hard and long way, go get yourself a step drill bit and experience the professional way of drilling holes.
